Oregon grocer brings new choices and unique shopping experience to Belmont Street

Market of Choice store to open in 2017

PORTLAND, Ore. — Eugene-based Market of Choice has broken ground on a 26,000-square-foot store at 1004 SE Belmont Street to open in the spring of 2017, offering a unique urban grocery store experience that will cater to everyone in the neighborhood.

“We’re excited to be part of this new urban neighborhood development,” said Market of Choice President Rick Wright. “Portlanders pride themselves on high-quality food that’s local, and we’re all about that.”

The Belmont Street Market of Choice will be one of two stores to anchor the new three-block LOCA development in SE Portland, which will include an additional 23,000-square feet of shops and restaurants and more than 240 apartments. Immersed in historic neighborhoods and vibrant commerce, this eclectic, centralized hub will be the place to live, work and shop.

The market will feature many eco-friendly operating components. Natural and LED lighting, as well as solar tracking skylights will reduce the store’s dependency on electricity for lighting by 75 percent. And a state-of-the-art glycol refrigerant, an organic compound, will be used to create an efficient heat and hot water reclamation system. In addition to recycling, the store will separate compostable food waste and landfill waste.
