Market of Choice and Charlie’s Produce Help "Take A Bite Out of Hunger™" - 11,900 pounds of fresh apples to be donated to Oregon Food Bank

PORTLAND, Ore.– Market of Choice and Charlie’s Produce will make a donation of 11,900 pounds of fresh apples to Oregon Food Bank to help feed the local community on Wednesday, May 17. This donation signals the participation of Market of Choice and Charlie’s Produce in the Take a Bite Out of Hunger™ Program, sponsored by FirstFruits Marketing of Washington.

WHAT: 11,900 pounds of apples are delivered to Oregon Food Bank to help feed the hungry in the local community.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 17, 10:00 a.m.

WHO: Market of Choice, Charlie’s Produce, Oregon Food Bank

WHERE: Market of Choice, Cedar Mill Store at 250 N.W. Lost Springs Terrace, Portland, OR, 97229

HOW: First Fruits Marketing of Washington created The Take a Bite out of Hunger™ campaign to help feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States and Canada. Over 1.6 million pounds of fresh apples have been donated to local food banks in the communities of retailers like Market of Choice since the program’s inception in 2010. Last year alone, over 350,000 pounds of fresh apples were donated in participating retailers’ names to local food banks in their communities.

WHY: Hunger isn’t just about being hungry. It’s about food insecurity, or not having regular access to safe, affordable and nutritious foods. According to the USDA in 2015, nearly 13 percent of all U.S. households are food-insecure (16.1% in Oregon). Of those, households with children reported food insecurity at a higher rate than those without children: 17 percent compared to 11 percent.

This is Market of Choice’s first year and Charlie’s third year participating in the campaign.

“We’re proud to give back to our community, and participating in Take a Bite Out of Hunger is a great way to make a difference,” said Steven Coppit, store manager of Market of Choice in Cedar Mill. “This donation of 11,900 pounds of apples ensures that the shelves at our local food bank are stocked with fresh produce.”

“We love working with retailers and wholesalers, like Market of Choice and Charlie’s Produce, who are committed to serving their local communities,” said Tim Corkill, regional marketing manager of FirstFruits Marketing of Washington. “Together, we’re not only making a donation, but we’re making a difference while raising awareness of food insecurity in the United States and Canada.”
