Earth Day

Beautiful Oregon – Tim Giraudier

With Earth Day just around the corner, now is a good time to reflect on the ways we can strive, even in the smallest ways, to protect and improve our planet. As a company, Market of Choice continues to be committed to do what we can to support important environmental stewardship in the Oregon communities we serve.

Planting a tree goes a long way

In 2021, Market of Choice successfully gave way 2,000 trees to our customers to plant. Planting a tree is a simple way to make a positive environmental difference. Trees are important producers of the oxygen we breathe, to regulating temperatures and providing habitat for wildlife. Trees also reduce the amount of stormwater runoff, minimizing pollution and erosion in and near our waterways.

To continue our “plant a tree” tradition, this year we are giving away Oregon White Oak saplings, while supplies last, to the first 100 people with the purchase of any Hydroflask or Stasher item at each of our Market of Choice stores on Earth Day, April 22, 2022.

Oregon White Oak is indigenous to the Northern West Coast from California’s Bay Area to Vancouver B.C. and are increasingly at risk due to development. When grown to maturity, Oregon White Oaks provide wonderful shade for people and their homes, helping to lower energy costs. Oak leaves also absorb pollutants in the air, and their branches and acorns are important sources of shelter and food for many of our woodland creatures, especially in urban areas.

It may seem like a small thing to plant a tree, but it’s your chance to dig in and make a difference. Stop by your Market of Choice on Earth Day for a tree sapling and enjoy nurturing it as a living part of your little corner of the planet!

Helping to protect our watersheds

On a grander scale of important environmental work, this year Market of Choice is partnering with the McKenzie River Trust, a Eugene-based nonprofit that protects and conserves more than 7,000 acres within Oregon watersheds. These watersheds include the McKenzie River, the Long Tom River, the Upper Willamette River, the Coast and Middle Forks of the Willamette River, the Umpqua River, the Siuslaw River, and coastal streams and lakes from Reedsport to Lincoln City.

Healthy watersheds play a vital role in our ecosystems, improving water quality and carbon storage, as well as increasing the land’s resilience in fending off invasive species. McKenzie River Trust’s stewardship of these vital Oregon watersheds also affects our food system, creating avenues for environmentally thoughtful agricultural practices by our local farmers and ranchers to ensuring that fish and other food sources relying on the integrity of our waters are healthy, abundant and remain sustainable.

That’s important work, benefitting all of us who enjoy the food bounty and natural splendor inherent to Oregon’s landscape.

Join us in supporting the McKenzie River Trust from April 22 – July 22 with a donation at the register when you check out. All you need to do is tell your cashier that you wish to make a donation to the McKenzie River Trust, let them know how much you’d like to give and they will add it to your purchase. At the end of July we will total up donations and provide 100% of funds raised to the Trust, plus we’ll make a donation of our own.

Community giving is important to Market of Choice on Earth Day and every day.
