Reducing single-use products

Following city ordinances in Eugene and Portland to limit the use of single-use products, like straws and plastic utensils, Market of Choice is pledging to reduce single-use products at our stores in Ashland, Bend, Corvallis, Eugene, Portland and West Linn.

Over the last year, we’ve worked to identify opportunities to switch to more sustainable options to reduce our impact on the environment. New laws, as well recent global changes to recycling, has necessitated shift. And, it is simply the right thing to do.

Although plasticware can be convenient for customers, its impact on our landfills, streams and oceans is severe. This is why we are minimizing the use of straws, stir sticks, condiment packages, disposable cutlery, sweetener packets, salt and pepper packets and chopsticks.

New choices
At each of our stores, we now provide washable and reusable plates, bowls and flatware for in-store dining. At our condiment stations, you will find bottles of Oregon-made products, which will eliminate the need for packets and offer customers more condiment choices.

We have also made changes at our Market Barista counters, which now feature pourable sweetener containers and compostable straws. Along with our new in-store choices, customers who would like take-out convenience will have the option to use our new compostable cutlery.

We’re listening
We are working to provide the highest level of food safety and portability with the lowest possible impact to our environment. And, we promise to listen to you, our customers, and consider your thoughts and ideas as we continue to improve.

Look for signage in our stores indicating these changes. Our team members are knowledgeable about this new program if you have any questions or concerns—don’t hesitate to ask.

We are excited about these changes and strongly believe that each stride toward more sustainable options is a step in the right direction for our planet and your Market.
