We've Adopted An Alp!

Market of Choice is happy to announce its participation in the Adopt-an-Alp program, which unites Alp farmers in Switzerland and cheese mongers in America by shining a light on everyday life in the Alps and by maintaining a centuries-old cheesemaking tradition.

“We are so excited to be part of this program,” says Christie Alexandre-Zeoli, cheese buyer at Market of Choice. “This cheesemaking tradition revolves around the concept of transhumance – the movement of people and animals aligned with the seasons – which results in amazing Alpkäse cheeses.”

Market of Choice has adopted the Alp Fählen, in northeastern Switzerland, where the Inauen family spends their summers in the transhumance tradition. Silvia and Sepp Inauen, along with their six children, tend to the animals on the Alp and make wonderful cows’ and goats’ milk Alpkäse cheeses.

“The cheesemaking is led by Silvia, who produces anywhere between 250 and 300 wheels of Alpkäse every summer,” says Alexandre-Zeoli. “Because of their distance from civilization, a modern aging cellar was built right next to their chalet. So, the majority of cheeses stay up on the Alp until they are transported by foot or by horse, down the mountain to be shipped. In winter and spring, Sepp and Silvia hike or ski-hike up the Alp to about 4,200 feet to tend to the cheeses. It’s an amazing way of life.”

Besides being a delicious product, crafted in surroundings with clean air, pure water, lush flora and no fertilizing, Alpkäse cheeses offer an array of health benefits, says Alexandre-Zeoli. Over the course of the two last decades, many studies have referred to Alpkäse cheeses as “Functional Food” – food that benefits one’s health – because they are a rich source of essential nutrients; in particular, proteins, bioactive peptides, amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, such as calcium. “We’re thrilled to offer this healthy, delicious cheese to our customers. Fall is upon us, and what better time to enjoy some amazing cheese than now?” says Alexandre-Zeoli.

Available now, Alpkäse Alp Fählen cheeses can be found at Market of Choice Specialty Cheese Shops in Ashland, Bend, Corvallis, Eugene, Portland and West Linn.
