Vanessa

As a Scan Coordinator at our Cedar Mill Market, Vanessa ensures that all of your items ring up correctly at checkout. It’s a big job that requires a lot of attention to detail overseeing weekly price changes, but Vanessa is great at what she does.

Drawing on her wealth of experience in retail, she also takes on many other roles to assist our customers and our team, helping out in other departments on any given day. “I do whatever needs to be done,” Vanessa says. “We all work well together.”

One of the things she appreciates most about working for Market of Choice, she says, is that people pitch in to help out and everyone treats each other equally.

From the time she was a tot, Vanessa knew she wanted to work in a retail environment. “I always used to say, ‘I’m going to be a cashier one day,’” she says. She even had a toy cash register as a child and loved to ring up pretend customers with Monopoly money. When she became old enough that’s exactly what she did, eventually working her way up to become a store manager at a grocery store in Hawaii.

Vanessa joined the Market of Choice team in 2015, after moving to Oregon to be closer to her grandson. She has worked as bookkeeper and cashier and has also taken on many other roles in our Kitchen, Bakery and Meat and Seafood Departments. “I’ve pretty much done it all,” she says.

No matter the position, Vanessa loves interacting with customers and her teammates. “I like to work the public,” she says. “I enjoy it. I just love people, in general.”

Vanessa’s husband is also part of our team and was hired at the same time. It’s not a new situation for them, she says, given that they met on the job back in 1984. Vanessa loves the fact that they work for the same family-owned business, yet it’s important to them that they maintain a professional distance, she says.

“We have this running joke – He’s not my husband until after 4 o’clock,” she says with a laugh, adding: “I’m not his manager at work – I’m his manager at home!”
