Growing up in Morocco, Safae learned from her mother how to cook traditional Moroccan dishes, like tagine and couscous, made with fantastic spices. “My mom, she’s the best,” Safae says. “She’s a very, very good cook.”
Now a professional cook herself, Safae loves to share her skill, talent and love of food with her customers and teammates at our Cedar Mill Market. Prior to Market of Choice, Safae worked in restaurants and for a family food truck and was also a flight attendant.
Since marrying and moving to Portland from Morocco, Safae has come to appreciate many American foods, as well – her current favorites being our Market Kitchen Grill Burgers and The Biggie Sandwich with slow-smoked beef brisket. “They are so good!” she says.
Before joining the Market of Choice team, Safae was a customer. It’s one of the many reasons she applied for a job. “Everyone was so friendly,” she says.
When she’s not working, Safae enjoys playing basketball and volleyball. Her mother is a big fan of volleyball and taught Safae how to play.
She might someday consider opening her own restaurant, specializing in Moroccan dishes, she says, which would please her father. “He told me that maybe I should open my own place because I cook so well – maybe he’s right,” she says.
For now, though, she’s happy to be making scratch-made foods for Market of Choice customers. “Cooking makes me happy,” she says.
