Spring at last?

It’s no secret that those of us who live in Portland have been itching for this long winter to end. I actually started buying spring wines a month ago in hopes that the weather would turn, only to discover that I can’t control the weather by what I bring into Market of Choice. Weird, right?

Well, with last week’s little burst of sunshine on Friday and Saturday, I started to believe that spring may actually have come to Portland at last, so I think it’s time to talk about some fantastic wines I have seen in the last couple of weeks.

For starters, Cameron Winery just released their 2010 “Cameroni” Giovanni – their Pinot Bianco (or Pinot Blanc to us non-Italians). With its ripe nectarine and peach flavors, this wine made me picture myself sipping a glass on my patio on a warm spring day. And at $13.49, it’s a deal.

I also just brought in a lovely white wine from Puglia, a region in Southern Italy. From Colli della Murgia, “Erbaceo” is a rich, round white with great tropical fruit flavors. It is a blend of two Italian varietals, Fiano Minutolo and Greco. At $13.79, this white will pair beautifully with fish or other seafood.

Not to forget rosé as a fantastic spring wine (or all year round, if you ask me), the Tavel Rosé from Domaine LaFond reminds me that spring is finally here. This rosé is a bit darker in color than the ones you may want to drink in the dead of summer, and has a rich, dark fruit characteristic. At $17.99, it’s great with Easter dinner, too.

Think spring!
