Chenin Blanc: A Winter White

With temperatures hovering around freezing, drinking a bright, crisp white wine like Pinot Gris seems almost ludicrous, so many people turn to varietals like Chardonnay during the winter. With a rounder palate, it seems to better suit heartier dishes with cream and butter sauces we see throughout the colder months.

However, if you’ve had a few too many Chardonnays this winter and are itching for something new to try, check out Chenin Blanc.

Most famous in the Loire Valley of France, Chenin Blanc comes in almost every form imaginable. It can be made into bone dry still or sparkling wines showing quince and apple flavors; off-dry versions with honey and floral characteristics; or even dessert wines with the grapes having been exposed to Noble Rot.

I’m loving the dry Chenin Blancs right now, particularly Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Montlouis sur Loire Sec from Jacky Blot. With 50% aged in oak, it has a round mouthfeel and gorgeous, bright apple flavors. And you can’t go wrong with Francois Chidaine’s Sparkling Montlouis sur Loire, a festive take on Chenin made in the traditional Champagne method. And finally, another gorgeous, rounder and richer Chenin Blanc to try is Domaine des Baumard Savennières. All three of these wines are dry and crisp, under $25 and just perfect for a winter white. Enjoy, and stay warm!
