Local strawberries are here!

It has finally dried out enough for the berries to come on, and Green Gables Farm in Philomath is bringing us fresh-picked berries that taste great! Most local berry growers are running about two weeks later than normal due to the unusually wet spring.

Our Eugene and Junction City organic leaf lettuce growers start this week, and will be delivering their fresh locally grown red leaf, green leaf, and romaine lettuce to Market of Choice stores daily. To kick off the season, I put all three varieties of organically grown lettuce on sale for 2 for $3 from 7/2 thru 7/15, so come get some, and help support your local farmers!

Just north of us in Walla Walla, Washington, they are packing their famous sweet, yellow onions, which will be arriving in our stores this week. These sweet onions are some of the best in the world, and make all your summer barbecue foods taste better, whether on a burger or in a potato salad, you can taste the sweet difference.

Washington cherries hit the stores on Friday, later than usual, but better tasting than ever!
I think that staying on the trees longer gives them more flavor, and it has also let them have time to get larger than normal. The result is big, plump sweet cherries that you can’t resist!

Brentwood corn started Friday, and is looking and tasting great! This is the best corn of the year coming out of California; it’s almost as good as our local corn, which we will see in August. We have white, yellow, and bi-color, just in time for your Fourth of July holiday.

John and his crew out at Hey Bales! Farm in Lorane are bringing us their fresh baby salad greens and spinach. Their greens are fresh cut every day and have a spicy flavor that is noticeably different than the baby greens that we get out of California, during the winter months.

The local blueberries are running late, and will be about another week, as long as the weather stays warm, I will keep you posted! The crop is big, and with the late start, the season should run through most of July.

Summer is finally here, so get out and enjoy it!
