Elysian Bifrost Winter Ale: A medium-bodied winter ale brewed with Munich and Cristal malts; bittered with Centennial, Amarillo, and Styrian Goldings hops. 6.25 ABV, 42 IBU’s. Malty, with good hop presence and a smooth mouth. $3.99/22oz. High & Mighty Home for the Holidays, brewed in Belchertown, Massachusetts, by Will Shelton, formerly of Shelton Bros. Beer Imports. 7% ABV, oak-aged brown ale. $8.99/22oz. Southern Tier Crème Brulee Imperial Stout, one of the most unusual beers I’ve tasted this year. 9.2% ABV, brewed with two-row pale and dark caramel malts, vanilla bean, and lactose sugar; in the kettle Columbus hops; for aroma, horizon. Dark brown with brown ochre head that lasts, massive nose of burnt sugar, vanilla, and caramel that saturates the palate and lingers on the end for what seems like forever. $8.59/22oz. Pelican Perfect Storm barrel-aged Barleywine-style ale. Aged for four months in Evan Williams Bourbon barrels, ABV 13.5%, 40 IBU’s. Golden Promise, Munich, Melanoidan, and Caramel Malts and flaked Wheat; Magnum, Glacier, and Mt. Hood hops. $19.99/22oz. Firestone Walker 13th Anniversary Ale, a blend of numerous barrel aged beers, many having spent two years or more in retired Bourbon, Rye, and Wine barrels before blending, and including barleywine, imperial stouts and imperial browns. 1,000 cases made. $24.99/22oz. Nectar Black Xantus: Bourbon Barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout. 13% ABV, 50. IBUs. Malts: 15% Oats hopped with 100% U.S. grown Fuggles. Peach black with lasting foam; piney on the nose, caramel in the mouth with some creaminess. Good length. $14.39/22 oz. Southern Tier Iniquity Imperial Black Ale: 2 row Pale malts, debittered black malt, Chinook, Cascade hops; in the hop back, Cascade and Centennial dry hops; 9% ABV. Pours burnt umber with a good head. Notes of berries and pine on the nose. Full in the mouth with roasted maltiness, and dark berry hints. $6.99/22oz. Southern Tier Ja Va: 2 row Pale, Caramel, Chocolate, and Black malts, roasted barley, Cascade and Columbus hops, Jamaican roasted coffee, 12%ABV. Burnt umber with lasting foam; burnt sugar, malty, caramel, coffee/espresso that fuses well. $10.89/22oz. Manabrea Brewery was founded in 1846 and is still owned and run in the traditional manner by the same family. Located in Piemonte in Biella in the Alpine foothills, the brewery uses underground cellars, Slovenian oak barrels for aging, and pure Alpine water in the brewing process. The Menabrea Birra Bionda has 4.8% ABV. Pale gold in the glass with lasting foam; malty in the mouth with hints of caramel. Good length. $2.79/12oz. Twee, a collaboration ale from DeProef brewery and John Mallet of Michigan’s
Bell Brewing. Porter and Dubbel style ales “mashed up” with sour cherries and
allowed to be inoculated with brettanomyces yeast in the secondary
fermentation. Think Belgian fruit filled chocolates and espresso.
