Beer at SW Portland

I live in NE Portland, and one of the first few breweries I visited when I moved here 6 years ago was a great one: Alameda Brewing Company. Located in Beaumont Village, at NE Fremont and 47th Avenue, Alameda has some super-solid everyday beers at a great price.

The most shocking thing about Alameda is that they bottle almost all of their offerings in the pub. Their four year-round beers in 22 oz bottles are as follows:

  • Klickitat Pale, a hoppy pale ale balanced with just enough malt – great for all weather
  • El Torereo IPA, a very balanced, but still hoppy, IPA
  • Yellow Wolf Imperial IPA, an Imperial with over 100 IBUs that retails for the same price as their regular IPA (!!!)
  • Black Bear XX Stout, an award-winning stout with notes of chocolate & coffee

These beers are great everyday beers, and are definitely crowd pleasers at only $4.29. So if you haven’t tasted these beers yet, give them a try… you’ll thank me later!

By now, you should be well on your way to finding a Halloween costume. That is, unless you’re like me and would prefer to stay home, watch scary movies and drink some of the seasonal Halloween beers that have hit Market of Choice Terwilliger. Whether you’re planning an eventful night out or a quiet night at home answering the door for trick-or-treaters, here are a few spooky beers to keep you company.

Southern Tier’s Pumking
One of the most interesting pumpkin beers I’ve tasted, this beer pours a light salmon-amber color and tastes like pumpkin pie. Cinnamon, fresh pumpkin and even whipped cream are present flavors, which linger long after the beer is gone. It’s 8.6% ABV, so this 22 oz bottle may be one to share.

Dogfish Head Punkin
The famed seasonal from Dogfish Head is even better this year. Dark amber in color with plenty of spice, this beer will leave you wishing you had another. We got a very limited amount here in Oregon, so get it while you can!

Elysian Night Owl
This pumpkin beer is super pumpkin-y, with a tangy deliciousness. Elysian makes some fantastic beers and this seasonal is no exception.

Lompoc’s Monster Mash
Different than most of the seasonals around this time of year, this beer is an imperial porter. Rich and roasty, with none of that wimpy, watery porter characteristic that you sometimes find, Monster Mash is a beer you’ll want around long after Halloween is a distant memory.

EPIC Brewing Company is now being distributed in Oregon, and I had the pleasure of tasting a few of their beers last week at Saraveza in North Portland.

Hailing from Salt Lake City, EPIC is Utah’s first brewery since prohibition to brew exclusively high alcohol content beer. With nearly 30 beers coming out of the brewery, they’re doing some really interesting things, but more importantly, their basic staples are just really well-made beers.

Market of Choice on Terwilliger is currently carrying the Spiral Jetty IPA (which is one of the best IPAs I’ve tasted in awhile) and the Hopulent IPA, which comes in October 1st. This fantastic Imperial IPA was one I was able to taste at Saraveza’s event, as well as their Imperial Red, which I’m sure will be making its way to the store soon, too… stay tuned!

A couple of weeks ago, samples of a new beer from Hood River were sent my way, from Logsdon Farmhouse Ales. While it’s very possible that I’ve been living under a rock for the past four months, I had not yet heard of this brand, so I did a bit of research.

Founded by David Logsdon, the founder of Wyeast and one of the founders of Full Sail, Logsdon ales are actually being made in a farmhouse in Hood River. In fact, except for the giant glass of Belgian beer in the landscape, I’m told that their label looks pretty much like the actual setting. The beers are all organic, and the bottles are finished with beeswax from the area.

I’m told that they are working on three other beers to be released this year. Additionally, they have imported the only real Flanders kreik cherry tree that exists in the U.S., and they plan to create a sharbeekse cherry orchard from this tree.

Research in tow, I happily took the samples I’d received home to taste with my husband. (He is very fond of my homework!)

The first beer we tasted was the Seizoen, a fruity and spicy, lightly hopped farmhouse ale. Probably the best domestic Saison style beer that I have tasted, I was impressed to find myself comparing it to the likes of one of my favorite Belgian golden ales, La Chouffe.

Their second beer, Seizoen Bretta, includes an additional yeast strain that adds an earthy, woodsy “funk” that can only be described as… delicious.

Sad to see these beers go, I called up the representative for Logsdon Farmhouse Ales and immediately ordered bottles for the store. We also scheduled a tasting at the SW Portland store for Friday, September 2nd, so you can stop by from 4:30 – 6:30 to taste these lovely beers for yourself!
